This September, Dirty Projectors will release Super Joo, the third in a sequence of five EPs to come in 2020. Each EP will feature a different band member on lead vocals Maia, Felicia, Kristin & Dave with everyone trading verses on the fifth and final installment.
Using a nylon-string acoustic guitar as his guiding instrument, Super Joo shows bandleader Dave Longstreth pairing longform melodies with surprising chord progressions to create a mood reminiscent of Arthur Russell, Chet Baker, and – of course – Joo Gilberto, the Brazilian bossa nova pioneer who died last year. Super Joo is a feeling, Longstreth says – one of understated intimacy that serves as 5EPss quietly confident core.
