Music for Intersecting Planes marks the first collaborativerelease between cellist Leila Bordreuil and organist KaliMalone.Minimal in means yet expansive in effect, the musicunfolds like beads on a thread, punctuated by silence anddeep breaths. Shifting currents of air pressure emergefrom the manually pumped organ, enriched by the cello’sfinely drawn harmonics to form a microscopic andgranular perspective of timbre. Interference patterns spinthe sound mass as Malone and Bordreuil play against thestillness of sine waves. Church bells ring in the distance.Undulating feedback gives rise to insistent calls fromthe organ before yielding to a tragic cello motif. Thealbum then closes with the brief and jubilant pizzicatoexclamation, “Endless Dance of Eternal Joy.”Recorded by candlelight at the Temple de SaintThoduoe in La Tour-de-Peilz in Switzerland, the musicbalances patience and intensity, composition and chance, severity and tenderness. In this collaboration, new facetsof both artists come to light: Bordreuil’s playing withheightened tonal and formal clarity, and Malone’s organwork in it’s most raw and textural form.Music for Intersecting Planes is a meeting of mindshonoring the timeless intrigue of acoustic phenomena.
