Description
She was a great singer, one who stylistically fitted in somewhere between Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith but with a touch of something that made her a more commercial proposition than either. Washington could sell an R&B stomp just as well as she could interpret a torch song, and she could hold her own. She could sing anything with conviction, allied to a style that was completely her own. Who knows where her career would have taken her had she not died so young?
